Ms. Sunita Devi is a Dalit widow and member of the organizational unit and the Self Help Group (SHG) unit of the Indian NGO Parivartan Kendra. She was facilitating a meeting of the SHG in front of her house when the attack against her was made. 16 January 2011 A meeting of the Self Help Group was organized by the President of the organization, Ms. Premsheela Kumari at the door of the house of Ms. Sunita Devi. As the women were arriving, the assailants Mr. Santlal Sinh and Mr. Surendra Sinh walked up to Ms. Sunita Devi and dragged her away by her sari. They started beating her and snatched the ornaments from her ear. They also used demeaning language and shouted caste-based slurs at Ms. Sunita Devi. The other women of the SHG intervened and stopped them. After the attack, Ms. Sunita Devi went to the police station and registered a first information report (FIR) against the attackers. The case is registered under 341/323/504/354/379/34 IPC and SC/ ST atrocities prevention act 3(X). After registering the FIR, the accused men continued to threaten Ms. Sunita Devi and her family, in order for her to withdraw the complaint. These threats caused Sunita to flee her home with her daughter. 23 January 2011 Ms. Sunita Devi returned to her house with her family. A village meeting was organized and people were informed about the attack against Ms. Sunita Devi.

Ms. Devi was facilitating a meeting of the SHG in front of her house when two men attacked her. The men were money lenders in the community who had lost a lot of their businesses due to the self help group's saving system.The two men verbally and physically assaulted Ms. Devi.
