- Event Description
On 12 August 2011, the Daklak Bar Association disbarred human rights defender and lawyer Mr Huynh Van Dong from practicing law for three years. Huynh Van Dong is a prominent human rights lawyer who has been a practicing lawyer since 2003 and works on cases concerning the protection of land rights and the right to freedom of expression. Further Information The Daklak Bar Association's decision to disbar Huynh Van Dong was influenced by three factors namely; (1) a recommendation from the People's Court of Ben Tre; (2) Huynh Van Dong's refusal to defend cases that are assigned to him by the association; (3) Huynh Van Dong reportedly did not pay the association's monthly fee. Front Line has been informed that he is currently being monitored by police officers who are positioned directly in front of his house. There are concerns that this may impact negatively on the psychological well-being of Huynh Van Dong and his family. Front Line believes that the disbarment of Huynh Van Dong is directly linked to his human rights work in defending Thai Ha Catholic village in Hanoi and Con Dau Catholic village in Danang who were forcefully evicted from their lands by the authorities in 2009-2010. It is believed that this decision was also made to prevent him from representing clients in human rights cases in the future.
