On 29 January 2013, 23 farmers and 3 activists from the Indonesian Forum for the Environment, or Walhi were arrested and detained following a protest on land rights. Police used excessive force against protesters and three remain in detention today. The arrest took place in front of the police headquarters in Palembang, South Sumatra during a protest rally held by farmers and their organizations on Tuesday. The arrest and torture, said the coalition statement, was allegedly part of the provincial police's scenario to help[state plantation firm] PTPN VII Cinta Manis in clearing people from a disputed land." The protestors were demanding the release of Suardi bin Damiri, a 32-year-old farmer, on Friday. The sugar plantation there has been a source of tension since state-owned plantation company PTPN VII forcefully evicted 22 villages in the district to set it up in 1982.
