Bangladesh: media workers assaulted for covering lad grabbing case

Some local journalists along with Dhaka-based senior journalist Rajib Noor came under attack by an alleged land grabber Waheed Mia while collecting news in Habiganj on Sunday.
The attack took place in front of the house of Ramnath Biswas in union 2 of Baniachong upazila on Sunday afternoon, the victims complained.
Reporters were attacked while collecting news about the occupation of the house of Ramnath Biswas, a world traveler and travelogue writer, in Baniachong upazila of Habiganj.
Among the victims of the attack are special assignment editor of bdnews24.com Rajib Noor, president of Baniachong Press Club and Baniachong correspondent of Kaler Kantha Moshahed Mia, Baniachong correspondent of Habiganj Samachar Patrika Touhid Mia and Baniachong correspondent of Deshseba newspaper Alamgir Reza.
The injured in the attack were treated at Baniachong Upazila Health Complex.
Describing the incident, Rajib Noor told journalists that, ‘The house of Ramanath Biswas had been occupied by Waheed Mia and his family for a long time. We went there to make a hands-on report on the matter.’
‘Waheed, his family members and associates snatched my cellphone and started attacking the group of journalists,’ he said.
General Secretary of Habiganj Press Club Rashed Khan said, ‘We have spoken to police super SM Murad Ali about this. The SP said that legal action would be taken against those who attacked the journalists.’
Local Union Parishad chairman Haidaruzzaman Khan told reporters Waheed Miah had been occupying the house for a long time.
Denying the allegation, Waheed Mia said, ‘There was an argument over coming to my house and taking pictures without permission. We did not attack anyone.’
A case will be filed with the Baniachong police over the attack, the victim journalists said.
Habiganj SP SM Murad Ali said, ‘We are taking legal action against the attack on journalists.’
Meanwhile, Dhaka Reports Unity (DRU) condemned the attack on journalist Rajiv Noor.
In a statement, DRU President Nazrul Islam Mithu and General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib demanded immediate arrest of the culprits
Ajay Chandra Deb, officer-in-charge of Baniachong police station, said that he heard the incident.
‘However, no complaint has been received in this regard yet. Action will be taken if complaints are received,’ he added. Ramnath Biswas was born on January 13, 1894 in Bidyabhushanpara of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj. He spent his old age in Kolkata. He died there on November 1, 1955.
