Two journalists– Jewel Mridha, Jashore based staff correspondent of Somoy TV and his camera person Abul Kalam Azad on Wednesday were assaulted by the police at Jashore General Hospital while covering the incident of the Indian Border Security Force firing on Tuesday.
The incident took place when they went to the hospital for gathering information about the Bangladeshi nationals injured in the BSF firing, Jewel Mridha told reporters.
‘We’re barred by the police to have video footage of the wounded,’ he added.
Earlier, two Bangladeshis– Babu Mia, 32, and Dalim Hossain, 32, of Daulatpur village under the Banapole port police station were wounded by the Indian BSF at Daulatpur frontier under the Benapole port police station at about 10:00pm on Tuesday.
The injured were undergoing treatment at Jashore General Hospital after the incident.
The port officials said that the Bangladeshis were wounded as the BSF of Kaliani camp of India opened rubber bullets as they were trying to cross the border at night.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Kurshid Anwar, commanding officer of 21 Border Guard Battalion, confirmed that both sustained bullet wounds as the BSF of Kaliani camp of India opened fire.
The wounded were rescued and given treatment at Jashore General Hospital, he added.
On information about journalist assault, journalist leaders and police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Rupon Kumar Sarker, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch came to Jashore Press Club and assured journalists of punishing the policemen responsible for assaulting the journalists.
