Bangladesh: journalist threatened by local government representative

A complaint has been received against a public representative of Kalia upazila of Narail for abusing a journalist in obscene language and threatening to break his arms and legs. The journalist made a general diary (GD) about this last Friday at Naragati police station in Kaliar.
The journalist's name is Amanat Islam alias Parvez (30). He is working as upazila representative in Kaliya of Asian Television. He is from Char Dumuria village of Baisona Union of the same police station. Son of Felu Sheikh. The accused representative is Md. Russell Sheikh (38). He is a member of Ward No. 9 of Baisona Union Parishad (UP) and a resident of North Dumuria village.
In this regard, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naragati Police Station said on Sunday afternoon. Mostafizur Rahman told Prothom Alo that a GD was made at the police station last Friday afternoon. The permission of the court has been sought to investigate this matter. Necessary action will be taken if permission is given.
Journalist Amanat Islam mentioned in GD that last Friday afternoon he (Amanat) went in front of Naragati police station to collect news about an abused woman. There, UP member Russell Sheikh stopped gathering news about the woman and started abusing in unspeakable language. He also threatened to break his hands and feet. At one stage he tried to take away his camera. When the people around him came running on his screams, Russell Sheikh left after threatening to kill him.
This representative has a 5 minute 1 second video of the incident. In the video, UP member Russel Sheikh is seen abusing vulgar language.
When asked about this, UP member Russell Sheikh told Prothom Alo over the phone, 'There was only a conversation with him (journalist).' He did not agree to talk about this.
Journalist Amanat Islam said, 'I went in front of Naragati police station after receiving the call of that woman. Russell Sheikh was there. There he used that. Before that I didn't know anything about that woman. I am an agricultural entrepreneur. I also do journalism. I am suffering from fear, I may be attacked at any moment.'
