On 21 September 2012, 13 human rights activists were charged for violating article 18 of Burma's Public Assembly law, which requires demonstrators to obtain permission to publicly assemble and demonstrate, after having organised a peaceful march to mark International Peace Day. The arrested activists were joined by 1000 others activists in Rangoon calling for peace in Burma's Kachin state. Two of the 13 arrested have had to appear at more than 30 court hearings in multiple Rangoon townships.
