- Event Description
A badly bruised Mumbai-based RTI activist was found in an unconscious state by the Surat police at Palsana locality here on Sunday. The police admitted him in the Surat civil hospital where he regained consciousness after a few hours. He later gave his name to the police as Santosh Tiwari, a former jawan of the Central Industrial Security Force, and a resident of Mumbai. He told the police that after resigning from the CISF, he was working as an RTI activist and had filed some complaints in connection with some land disputes in Mumbai. He said he was "kidnapped" from Mumbai on October 14 and was brought to Surat where he was beaten up and left unconscious. He said he was receiving some threats from one "Dilawar" for the last one-and-a-half months asking him to withdraw from a land case. Mr. Tiwari alleged that Dilawar was closely connected with the personal assistant of an influential political leader in Mumbai, who had a stake in the disputed land and was behind his kidnapping and assault. The Surat police has registered a case and forwarded the complaint to the Mumbai police for further action. Doctors said the condition of Mr. Tiwari was stable and he was likely to be discharged from the hospital soon.
