10 December 2010 Mr. Somsak Jiamteerasakul gave a public lecture at Thammasat University about the Thai monarchy, the Thai Constitution and Democracy. The public lecture was held by the Nitirat, a group of Thammasat law lecturers. During the lecture, he proposed an eight-point plan which called for a reform on the article 112 of the Criminal Code, l��se majest_ law. 7 April 2011 General Chan-ocha, Commander of the Royal Thai Army, openly condemned Mr. Somsak during his interview with media by calling him as "a mentally ill academic" who "has an intention on overthrowing the institution". 24 April 2011 Mr. Somsak held a press conference and claimed that he has been threatened by a senior government official with l��se majest_ charges in relation to his comments made during the lecture. 8 May 2011 The Royal Thai Army has officially filed l��se majest_ charges against Mr. Somsak. 11 May 2011 Mr. Somsak was summoned at the Nang Lerg Police Station in Bangkok. He was charged for publishing two articles which were critical to Princess Chulabhonr's recent interview with media on her life as a member of monarchy and her views on Thai politics. His articles were considered as defamatory to the monarchy by the Royal Thai Army. He was being accused because he expressed his opinions on the role and status of the monarchy in Thailand.
