A group of around 10-20 students gathered to conduct a peaceful assembly in Sorong City, with the aim to protest the court ruling issued against the perpetrator of a racist incident in Surabaya in 2019. The incident affected a Papuan citizen, two defendant were found not guilty and one defendant that was found guilty of racist speech was only given 8 months imprisonment. The police dispersed this assembly on the claim that the protestors did not have the permit to stage it (which is not needed according to Indonesian law). The protesters then moved to another spot, Basuki Rahmat Street, to conduct their peaceful assembly which consist of a silent protest while holding signs of aspirations, and sealing their mouth with duct tape. While wrapping up after the protest was over, nine protestors were arrested by the police.
