Bangladesh: journalist assaulted by followers of former MP for publishing news

A group of armed assailants attacked journalists in the presence of Zafar Alam MA, former MP of Chakria-Pekua constituency of Cox's Bazar. Mohammad Ullah, Joint General Secretary of Chakaria Press Club was seriously injured in this incident.
He is working in National Daily Manabzamin and Daily Inani published from Cox's Bazar. At one stage of the attack, an attempt was made to kill him. At that time, the attackers took away his two mobile phones and cash. Injured journalist Mohammad Ullah has been admitted to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex. The doctor of the emergency department of the upazila health complex confirmed that he was later sent to the district headquarters hospital.
The attack took place in Badal Munsi's chamber in Chakaria police station center area at 2.30 pm on Tuesday. Journalist Mohammad Ullah, the victim of the attack, and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria police station Sheikh Mohammad Ali confirmed this information.
OC Mohammad Ali said that as soon as the news was received, a group of police including Police Inspector (Investigation) Arup Kumar Chowdhury and Operation Officer Rajiv Chandra Sarkar were sent to the spot and the situation was brought under control. Legal action will be taken if the victim makes a written complaint in this regard. Meanwhile, the leaders of Chakaria Press Club called a protest meeting in the evening regarding the attack on journalist Mohammad Ullah. A protest meeting was held in the press club auditorium on Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of Chakaria Press Club President M Jahed Chowdhury and General Secretary M Mizabul Haque. This was confirmed by former president Abdul Majeed.
Injured journalist Mohammad Ullah claimed on the phone that he was staying near Chakaria police station before the incident. At that time, a group of terrorists attacked under the leadership of former local member of parliament Zafar Alam. He claimed that the attackers attacked him on the instructions of the former MP. According to sources, Mohammad Ullah published news about various irregularities of former MP Zafar Alam from the last national parliamentary election. Jafar Alam and his followers were extremely angry at this. Local journalists claim that this attack was done because of his anger.
The former MP Zafar Alam's mobile number was called multiple times but could not be contacted due to lack of connection.
Meanwhile, a protest meeting was held at the press club office on the same evening in the evening of the attack on Mohammad Ullah under the chairmanship of Chakaria Press Club president M Jahed Chowdhury and general secretary Mizbaul Haque. In the meeting, strong demands were made to the administration to bring the attackers under the law. Apart from this, various programs have been announced including human chain, handing out memorandums.
