Bangladesh: three journalists assaulted by political party leader

It has been alleged that the chairman of Mulghar Union Parishad (UP) of Rajbari Sadar Upazila assaulted three journalists. This incident took place at the main UP office of Sadar Upazila on Monday afternoon.
Aggrieved journalists have given a written complaint to the police. Apart from this, the matter has been verbally informed to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. The chairman's name is Sheikh Md. Ohiduzzaman. He is serving as General Secretary of Sadar Upazila Awami League.
Victim journalists are Imran Hossain, Atiyar Rahman and Shahidul Islam. Imran Machranga Television and District Representative of Daily Pratidin Bangladesh Newspaper. Atiyar Rahman is working as the District Representative of Daily Ganamukti Newspaper and Shahidul Islam is working as the District Representative of Dainik Kagar Newspaper.
Talking to local people and journalists, it is known that Moolghar Union had complained of illegal cutting of soil in Bejkola area and irregularities in the distribution of VGF rice on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr. After collecting the news, they went to the UP office to take the chairman's speech. The chairman got angry when he wanted to talk about it. First, an aide of the chairman attacked him. Then the chairman pushed him out. He also beat his colleagues.
UP Chairman Sheikh Md. Ohiduzzaman said, 'I have received a total of 904 people in the union. Those journalists came to me with bad intentions. Said a very bad thing about me. There was anger between both parties in this incident. No one was pushed or assaulted.'
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Iftekharuzzaman said legal action will be taken after investigating the matter.
Deputy Commissioner Abu Qaiser Khan said, he knows the matter. Legal action will be taken in this regard.

On 8 April 2024, three journalists namely Imran Hossain, Atiar Rahman, and Shahidul Islam were assaulted by the Union Parishad political party chairman Sheikh Md. Wahiduzzaman after the journalists went to the chairman's office in Chattogram, Bangladesh to talk to him about alleged illegal soil extraction and irregularities in the distribution of VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice.
