MUZAFFARNAGAR: An RTI activist was pulled out of a bus he was travelling in and thrashed with lathis by a group of people on Saturday. Activist Sanjay Pundir, 40, was admitted to a nearby hospital and later was referred to the district hospital where his condition continues to be serious. The incident occurred near Hindon police picket of Charthawal police station area. According to the victim's family, Pundir, who works with a lawyer in Muzaffarnagar, had filed many petitions to seek information on several issues concerning his village. "My brother was beaten up when he was going to the court. Attackers from the same village had pulled him out of the bus and thrashed him," the victim's brother, Sanjay Pundir, said. According to Vidhyachal Tiwari, station house officer of Charthawal police station, "We have sent him for a medical examination, and a case will be registered after getting complaints from Pundir." Superintendent of Police (city) Omveer Singh said, "I have instructed the local police to take strong action in the case. The SHO also visited the spot. An FIR will be registered once the police get the complaint." According to a local, Pundir was attacked because he used to file RTI petitions whenever he found any inaccuracy in the government work in the area.
