Action against the increase in the price of fuel oil (BBM) also took place in Makassar City, Wednesday (31/8/2022). In fact, the students were involved in pushing and shoving with the police officers who carried out security. The demonstration was held by dozens of students on behalf of the Student Movement Organization (OPM) on Jl Sultan Alauddin, Makassar.
The pushing was triggered when demonstrators burned used tires on the Trans South Sulawesi Road that connects Makassar City with Gowa Regency. The action of burning used tires was immediately intercepted by officers and involved pushing each other. Pushing each other did not last long, the police tried to calm the students. This student action made the traffic flow to Gowa Regency and the direction to Makassar City to be jammed. The students again continued their action by giving speeches and unfurling banners rejecting the increase in fuel prices. In their action, the students assumed that the planned increase in fuel prices in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic would have a very big impact on the community.
"We urge the government not to increase fuel prices, because rising fuel prices will burden the lower class of society," said the coordinator of the action, Rival in his oration. Rival continued, the impact that is felt by the community the most if the government continues to increase fuel prices is the increase in the price of basic commodities, which is currently climbing up. "If fuel rises, of course the impact on the prices of basic commodities will also increase. Of course it will increase the burden on the poor," he said. Before the Maghrib prayer, the students finally dispersed in an orderly manner.
