- Event Description
Three activists from a group called "Free People Thailand 58" were taken into police custody on Sunday morning after being detained at a bus stop in front of a department store at Victory Monument where they had demanded the government hold a weekly people's opinion forum, reports said. In front of Center One department store, the three, led by Akrakrit Noonchan, 47, produced white group T-shirts printed with a picture of a bird with tied beak and legs. The T-shirts were distributed to onlookers and reporters. The other two members of the group were Worachart Pipakpimcharoen, 42, and Sarinee Boonchu, 45. They also distributed a leaflet with a message saying the group was not protesting against or challenging martial law, or was hired to stage the protest. The message said the group only wanted the government to launch a weekly public forum to gather opinions on how to solve the problems of high goods prices, the increasing cost of living and other issues. The group said it believed that without public participation the government will not be able to solve problems. It also called on the government to relax restrictions on public expressions of opinion. While the three were waiting for more group members to arrive, a number of police and soldiers deployed ahead of the protest escorted them to a police booth nearby. Mr Akrakrit, Mr Worachart and Ms Sarinee were later taken to Phayathai police station for further questioning.
