A Chittagong court has ordered a Jubo League leader to be sent to jail in connection with an attack on a journalist in Chittagong city.

The accused, identified as Md Saddam, 35, son of deceased Aziz Mia, resides in Nawab Ali Mistribari of Halisahar police station in Chittagong city. He introduced himself as a follower of AJM Nasir Uddin, the general secretary of the city Awami League.

Saddam surrendered in the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam on Wednesday at noon and applied for bail. However, after the hearing, the court denied bail and ordered him to be sent to jail, said Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, the plaintiff's lawyer.

Earlier, the attack on Channel 24's staff cameraperson Salim Ullah occurred on Sunday night while he was recording a video of a clash between two groups supremacy for dominance in the Monsurabad area under the city's Double Mooring police station. Following the attack, Salim filed a case with the Double Mooring Police Station, naming eight people as the main accused.

According to Salim, the victim of the attack, as he was on his way home from the office around 10:30pm on Sunday, he encountered a confrontation in Monsurabad. He began recording videos to gather news, prompting Saddam and his followers at the scene to assault him. They proceeded to beat him and attempt to kill him with a knife. The attackers retreated when local residents intervened. The attack resulted in severe injuries to his eye and leg ligaments.

Later, police arrested seven people in connection with the attack on Sunday night, all of whom were granted bail after appearing in court the next day.

Meanwhile, the Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) held a rally on Wednesday morning to protest the violent attack on journalist Salim Ullah while he was performing his professional duties.
