Cases of HRDs – 2017 Statistics

Between January and December 2017, FORUM-ASIA documented 251 cases of violations and abuses against (Women) Human Rights Defenders (W/HRDs) in 16 Asian countries. The documented violations and abuses are in form of, among others: arbitrary arrest and detention; intimidation and threats; use of violence; administrative harassment; killing; judicial harassment; as well as threats to family members of HRDs.
Most of the harassment are related to right to freedom of expression, including in online space; while judicial harassment which often paired with arbitrary arrest & detention continue to be the most common types of harassment. FORUM-ASIA recorded 24 cases where W/HRDs lost their lives due to their work, resulting in the death of 35 individuals.
